Title

Spacecraft Power System Design

Speaker

John C. Logrando, Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company

Abstract

The presentation is designed to illustrate the multidisciplinary issues that must be considered
in the systems engineering of a spacecraft electrical power system. It includes a discussion of spacecraft power
system requirements definition, design trade-offs, solar arrays, energy storage, and power conversion electronics.

The list of topics to be discussed includes:

  • Review Electrical Power System Design considerations and requirements for space.

  • Space power system conceptual/architectural design and analysis

  • Define components and selection criteria with hardware examples.

  • Packaging techniques for space environments and reusable scaleable modular design.

  • Technology updates on key electrical power subsystem components and investment areas.

  •

Biography

John Logrando, has thirty five years of progressive direct experience in
program and engineering design and technology management of communications and power electronics systems for
high reliability avionics/spacecraft for commercial, civil, and military applications. In his current position,
he is responsible for the Electrical Power Subsystems Engineering for Lockheed-Martin for products which include:
Electronics Power Conditioners, Batteries, and Solar Arrays, Bus Regulation Components and Subsystem Design and
   Analysis.

Past positions include directorship of the establishment of the Lockheed Martin Power Center,
a group of 400 technical, manufacturing, and support personnel engaged in product development and technology, as
well as standard products for spacecraft power systems, power conditioning, batteries and TWTA-HV EPC productions.
He was also the Director of Advanced Development and Spacecraft Architecture, responsible for all IRAD and
     conceptual spacecraft design functions.

Mr. Logrando earned his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Penn State University in 1974, and
MBA from Shippensburg State University in 1981. He is a registered Professional Engineer, an adjunct professor at
Mercer County Community College and College of New Jersey, and a senior member of the IEEE and an AIAA. He has
been an IEEE/TAC/ABET program evaluator from 1989 ¨C 93 and was the Technical Chair for the AIAA 2004 Communications
Satellite Systems Conference and invited speaker at ISCe 2004 for Military Space IR&D Panel. He is a member on the
Virginia Tech and College of New Jersey technical advisory boards.

IEEE PELS SCV

The Santa Clara Valley chapter of the IEEE Power Electronics Society (IEEE SCV-PELS) is interested in the development of power electronics technology. This technology encompasses the effective use of electronic components, the application of circuit theory and design techniques, and the development of analytical tools toward efficient electronic conversion, control, and conditioning of electric power.

Hello IEEE PELS meeting attendee,

Due to heavy snowfall and the limited availability of flights out of the
Denver area our featured speaker for tonight's IEEE Power Electronics
Society meeting will be unable to make it. As a result, we are canceling
our  regularly scheduled Thursday night meeting.

If you have an interest in obtaining a copy of the presentation please
let me know via return e-mail.  The preview version of the chart package
